RAMADAN
Fidya and Kaffarah
Fidya
Fidya is to be paid in circumstances where one is unable to fast due to helplessness. A donation of £4 per missed fast (days) is required for everyone. This donation aims to feed the hungry two meals a day. Some examples of where fidya would be due include:
- The permanently ill
- Elderly people who are unable to fast
- Those in need of regular medication if their wellbeing could be affected
- Those with any form of mental illness
If fasting is not possible for the whole month of Ramadan, the total is £120.
Kaffarah
This is a major compensation. If a person breaks a fast intentionally, Kaffarah would then be binding as the form of redemption.
If a Ramadhan fast is broken intentionally, one would need to fast for sixty consecutive days – which is the Kaffarah – and then observe one qadha fast.
If more than one fast is broken intentionally, one will be required to compensate with one Kaffarah – by fasting sixty consecutive days – and a qadha fast for each extra fast broken.
If one cannot do these fasts due to poor health or old age then one must feed sixty poor persons
Cost: £4.00 x 60 – £240 to feed 60 people
